Ask for the exact plan answer
Medicare’s usual drug benefit is called Part D. It excludes medicines used for weight loss. Federal rule checked September 26, 2026.
For another accepted health problem, such as diabetes, the same medicine may be covered by Part D. The plan’s rules still apply. Medicare guidance checked September 26, 2026.
Ask the plan to check your exact drug and the reason written on the prescription, which is the medicine order. Get the plan’s answer before relying on a payment.
Learn the insurer’s plain words
The list of drugs your plan may cover is called its formulary. Prior authorization means getting the plan’s agreement first. Ask what information the health professional ordering your medicine needs to send.
- Does my plan list this particular product for coverage?
- Is approval needed before it is filled?
- How much would the pharmacy charge me?
- What happens if the request is denied?
A temporary Medicare route has conditions
GLP-1 is a signal made naturally in your body. It helps regulate blood sugar and hunger. Some medicines work on that signal and are called GLP-1 medicines.
Medicare has a temporary program called the GLP-1 Bridge. It sits outside usual Part D coverage. For people who qualify, a month’s supply of certain medicines costs $50. Medicare page checked September 26, 2026.
The Bridge begins on July 1, 2026 and ends on December 31, 2027. Medicare page checked September 26, 2026.
Who qualifies for the Bridge depends on health, age and insurance plan. It requires a medicine order and approval before the medicine is filled. Medicare rules checked September 26, 2026.
Payments under the Bridge do not move you toward the yearly spending limit for medicines covered by Part D. You cannot add coupons to the Bridge payment. Medicare rules checked September 26, 2026.
So paying for the Bridge does not bring you closer to the point where Part D stops charging you for other covered medicines. Ask your plan how both sets of bills would work.
